Heaps Decent is an Australian organisation empowering young people through skills building, cultural access and creativity.

Working with underrepresented and marginalised youth, our participatory program of music and visual media activities provides a pathway to discovery, personal growth and agency through self-expression.

The NSW government has launched a new arts policy – Creative Communities.

January 8, 2024

It provides a framework for the next 10 years that supports artists, creatives and cultural organisations and expands to include the rapidly growing creative industries.

At Heaps Decent we are encouraged to see prioritisation of First Nations culture, and also an acknowledgment that creative participation is essential to the wellbeing of everyone, and vital in the lives of children and young people:

“The evidence is overwhelming: young children who participate in cultural and creative activities are much more likely to do well at school, find connections and thrive in later life. Finding ways to make participation in making music, art, dance, video, or drama part of every child’s education will be an investment in their future and the future of the state”

A commitment to expanding and supporting opportunities for inclusion, education, pathways and sustainable careers is highlighted in the policy.

There are 5 guiding principals:

  1. Prioritise First Nations culture
  2. Embrace the arts, culture and creative industries
  3. Advocate for the value of culture
  4. Support sustainable growth
  5. Take our creativity to the world and bring the world to our stories

We look forward to seeing the realisation of of these principals. The full document can be accessed here:
